The Korean Cultural Centre and FCT UBEB Directors’ statements signal the start of the student drawing competition.

Since 2010, the Korean Cultural Centre and the FCT Universal Basic Education Board have held a yearly drawing competition between Korea and Nigeria. It began as part of the celebrations commemorating the foundation and formal opening of the Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria. Since then, the competition has been held every year.

The Drawing Competition aims to foster creativity in primary school students in the FCT through the arts. As a warm-up for the drawing competition, an art workshop for chosen art teachers in FCT was organized earlier this month.

There are 32 primary schools from various locations of the FCT participating in the competition, including both public and private schools, with a total of 100 students. The kids were divided into small groups and each group stayed in a distinct place with good spacing during the competition, as per COVID-19 standards. | Webem technology

Following the competition, the drawings will be screened and graded in May, followed by the award ceremony in May of that year.

The event’s importance:

The purpose of the drawing competition was to encourage creativity among Nigerian pupils while also promoting a better awareness of facts about Nigerian and Korean society. Students that participate in the tournament enhance their problem-solving skills, and the award and prize-giving ceremony encourages them to work even harder to excel in their many academic and co-curricular activities.

The event also serves as a vehicle for fostering cordial relations between Nigerians and Koreans.

Read the following excerpts from the Director’s Speech:

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and students, My name is Lee Jin Su, and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the KCCN’s annual Korea-Nigeria Pupils Annual Drawing Competition, the 10th edition, as the Director of the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria. This competition is held every year since our students have a lot of bright minds. But what is the point of art? Art is important because it allows people to express themselves and encourages them to be more creative. And we all know that children are the most inventive, even outsmarting their parents at times. One of the characteristics that all nations and races, including Korea and Nigeria, have in common is creative children.

Another important thing we have in common is our ongoing battle with Covid-19. This gave us the idea for this year’s theme: “Korea and Nigeria Unite Against COVID-19.”

This is why this topic is crucial. We’ve seen how our governments and citizens have dealt with Covid-19, but we’ve never fully addressed the pandemic through the eyes of our children. This is your chance to seize it.

With over 32 schools and over 80 children in attendance, this is an opportunity to learn through art what the younger generations think about Korea and Nigeria banding together to fight Covid-19, which is a product of our two countries’ ongoing relationship and is promoted by our organization, the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria.

We hope that this continues to develop and encourage unity, understanding, and ongoing bilateral relations between our two countries. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this event.

Good luck to all of the students here today; I am confident you will all do an outstanding job! May the best pencil come out on top!
