Welcome to the NERC Annual Essay Competition 2023. Register Now! This tournament is only open to Nigerian SS2 students. Entries are accessible to students in Nigerian secondary schools in senior secondary 2 who are eligible and interested (both public and private).


“Electricity Theft and Its Consequences for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI)” was the topic for 2021 NERC Essay Competition. keep checking back to see when this years’ title will be out!


The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is an autonomous agency created by the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 to regulate the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry’s technical and commercial aspects. The Commission’s responsibilities include licensing operators, establishing operating regulations and standards, establishing consumer rights and obligations, and establishing cost-reflective industry rates, among other things. The Commission is headquartered in Abuja and currently operates six zonal offices across the country’s six geographic zones.


Eligibility Status

Interested SS2 students should prepare an essay of at least 450 words and no more than 500 words to be submitted on or before August 23, 2023.

Fantastic prizes are up for grabs for the first, second and third positions.


How to Submit an Essay to the NERC Annual Essay Competition


The essay can be emailed to electricitychallenge@nerc.gov.ng or mailed to this email address: electricitychallenge@nerc.gov.ng. The essay should be addressed in the format below:

Take Note that: All submissions must include the student’s name, complete home and school addresses, email address, and phone number. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. on August 23, 2021, at the aforesaid address. Any entry received after the time limit has passed will be rejected.
